Graphene has been the first purely two-dimensional material (that is one atom thick). Its discovery has triggered tremendous efforts to understand its unusual properties. However, the more profound effect of this discovery has occurred when researchers have realized that graphene was only an example of the broad family of 2D materials. Those materials range from insulators to metals and semiconductors making this family very promising for future electronics. Especially if one considers the possibility to combine those materials. INAC has been devoting intense research efforts from the study of their synthesis to study the fundamental properties of these materials and use them to explore new possibilities.
