Research activity

The growing importance of nuclear industry necessitates an improved understanding of the speciation and redox properties of actinides both within spent nuclear fuel and in the environment. Aside from its high fundamental interest, the understanding of bonding, structure and reactivity of actinides is crucial for the development of more efficient types of nuclear fuel, new separation technologies in the retreatment of spent nuclear fuel and new remediation and decorporation strategies. In particular, the chemistry of pentavalent uranyl has important implications in nuclear industry and related environmental issues. However compounds containing the pentavalent uranyl UO2+ species remain rare and very little is known about their electronic structure and reactivity. This paucity of information is not surprising when one consider the strong tendency of uranium(V) to disproportionate to U(IV) and U(VI) and the ease and rapidity of oxidation of U(V) to U(VI).

The objectives of my thesis are the design of new stable uranyl(V) complexes, studying their physical properties (magnetism, electrochemistry) in order to improve the understanding of the bonding properties and the stability of uranyl(V), the design of polymetallic autoassemblies based on cation-cation interaction and the study of their magnetic properties and the synthesis and study of low oxidation state uranium complexes.
