Self assembly of lanthanide polymetallic complexes for the development of new luminescent probes

Lanthanide based materials gained great attention in the past few years due to unique spectroscopic and magnetic properties of lanthanides which have found wide application area from material science (organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for flat panel displays, amplifiers for fibre-optic communication) to biomedical applications (luminescent tags for biological molecules, sensors and contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging). However the number of studies in this field has been limited due to difficulties in controlling the coordination environment of f elements that shows variable coordination numbers with little stereochemical preferences.

The objective of this thesis is the development of synthetic strategies to include lanthanide ions in discrete high nuclearity polymetallic edifices and extended networks, better control of the formation of polymetallic Ln(III) or Ln(II) complexes by using suitable organic ligands and the study of intermetallic energy transfers and magnetic interactions to improve optical and magnetic properties for new materials.
