CRG instruments at the ILL

D23 single crystal diffractometer.

The two-axis diffractometer D23 was transferred from the reactor SILOE at CEN-Grenoble and installed on a supermirror thermal neutron guide at the ILL. The instrument has been designed to work with or without polarized neutrons, in the incident wavelength range 1.2 - 4 Å. It was recently improved by the installation of a completely new non-magnetic, compact and versatile secondary spectrometer. D23 is now perfectly suited for all kinds of diffraction measurements that require high magnetic fields.

IN12 triple axis spectrometer (run in collaboration with Forschungszentrum Jülich).

IN12 is a cold neutron three-axis spectrometer for high-resolution studies of low-energy
excitations. The instrument is equipped with a vertically focusing graphite monochromator
(1.05 < ki < 2.6 Å-1) and a focusing graphite analyser with variable horizontal and fixed vertical curvature. With a super-mirror bender and a Heussler analyser it can also be used for polarisation analysis. Due to a very low background the instrument achieves excellent performance for experiments where background suppression is essential.
Typical studies include excitations in low-dimensional magnetic systems, spin waves in localised magnets, magnetic correlations in heavy-fermion systems and non-Fermi liquids, elementary excitations in quantum liquids and measurements on magnetic multi-layers. Further, beam-time is also used in the field of soft-matter physics, especially for studies on glasses and liquids at low momentum transfer.

The CRG-B IN22 is a "state-of-the-art" polarized neutron three-axis spectrometer installed at the end position of a supermirror guide. It is open to the neutron community since spring 1998. It can be operated in the 5-120 meV incident-energy range in the unpolarized mode and in the 5-90 meV incident-energy range in the polarized mode. This spectrometer displays a very good flux/resolution compromise and a very low intrinsic background. A spherical-polarimetry option as been recently installed.
