Inac, Institute for Nanoscience and Cryogenics




A joint CEA-Univ. Grenoble Alpes research Institute, Inac is a (rating by French evaluation agency) “ a world class institute producing fundamental and multidisciplinary research, with… relevant partnerships with industry/technology developers”. Inac research activities range from nanoscale physics to chemistry and technology at the frontier of biology, encompassing photonics, spintronics, several technologies for energy and health, and cryogenic engineering. Over the last five years, Inac research led to approx. 1500 papers, 100 patents, and to the creation of 5 start ups.

Created as the ‘Département de Recherche Fondamentale  (DRF) in 1970, it adopted its current name on January 1st, 2008: Inac, for Institute for nanoscience and cryogenics.

Inac major commitments are to:

  • Produce frontier science results in basic research over selected fields of nanoscience and condensed matter, and develop innovative cryogenic engineering for large instruments and basic research. This implies disseminating knowledge, ever adapting research programmes on the bases of scientific opportunities, societal expectations, CEA and Univ. Grenoble Alpes scientific priorities, national and international key programmes. Reseach programmes are jointly definded with the CNRS for SYMMES and SPINTEC laboratories.

  • Take care of valorizing opportunities of applications emerging from Inac breakthroughs, through partnerships with technological research, industry or through the creation of start ups.

  • Train first class scientists through doctoral and post-doctoral studies. Inac also participates to higher education through teaching in Universities and Schools of Engineering.


9 ERC grants have been already obtained by Inac researchers since the beginning of the ERC program. Inac is ready to welcome candidates who wish to propose an ERC project in the Institute.

Apart from ERC grants, Inac is involved in nine H2020 projects and is coordinating three of them. Inac is open to new partnerships with European RTOs and Universities, in order to participate to H2020 calls. Inac is also totally open to settle partnerships with academic partners outside Europe.
